I always look for the best products for my family. That includes making sure that my family remains healthy. As a nurse I look for high quality products that will hold up to continuous use and the occasional drop on the floor.

I spent the last two weeks using the  MeasuPro Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff on my patients and my family. I made sure that I put it through a rigorous test. Here is what I found.

For patient use, it is quick and easy. Since my patients are all in the geriatric population, I would like to see that the wrist cuff is a little more flexible. The stiffer material inside to hold the shape can pinch thin shin and I had several patients verbalize it was uncomfortable putting it on. The accuracy was perfect. Considering that this is going on a wrist, I was impressed.

For home use, I loved it. I immediately tested it on myself. Just like anyone else would, right? I set myself up as patient #1. Then I went and popped it on my husbands wrist. he was patient #2. After placing it on my husband and hitting start, I walked away. When I returned, the MeasuPro was sitting on the counter. I immediately asked my husband what his blood pressure was. His reply, " I don't remember and the machine turned off." I hit the #2 button and his blood pressure popped up. 153/97. BUSTED! For those of you that may not know, that is too high.

My final test was for a young child. The namesake of this blog. He is currently 7 years old and was placed on a new medication that is regularly used to decrease blood pressure. No he does not have high blood pressure at 7. He is being treated for epilepsy with chronic insomnia and ADHD. This is all new to this family as we have dealt with sleepless nights for the last 5 years. Even though I work in the medical field, does not mean that I want to shove medications at my child. But we were convinced to start a trial of medications.  The first 10 days of the new medication were a low dose, but I was still panicked. The doctor set up all sorts of rules stating things like, no fluids after 6pm. Take the pill and climb right into bed. Make sure to use the restroom before taking the pill to ensure you do not need to get up after taking the pill. If any of those are not a red flag, I am not sure what would be. So for the first night, I check his blood pressure throughout the night to make sure he did not drop too low. After day 10, the dose doubled and I repeated the same process. They may have started treatment for insomnia for him, but they may be treating me next.... ugh.

Overall, the MeasuPro Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor is a great unit to use in your home. It is accurate, easy to use, and holds up to continuous use well.

Vitamin C Serum Review #vitamincserum

As I get older, the change in my skin scares me. Yes, I said it. The wrinkles, the lines, the dark spots, they are all there.

I have tried many products that claim benefits, most of which I never experience.  So I thought that I would try something new. Why not a Vitamin C serum?

I used the Naturalico Vitamin C serum each morning and night before bed. I made sure to apply a thin layer to a clean dry face and allow the serum to thoroughly dry before going to bed or applying my normal make-up routine.

After two weeks of daily use, here is what I noticed.

1. More even skin tone. It was Not drastic, but I figured if I continued to use the product, the over evenness would get better.
2. Healthy glow. My skin no longer had its normal dull appearance. I now have a healthy all over glow to my face. As a younger woman, I would have disliked this look, but as I get older and the natural oils fade, this is a look that I aim for now.

Smart Ones Oatmeal

Does the picture above make you hungry? It makes me hungry! When i recently went to the store to pick up my Smart Ones oatmeal, I struggled at which flavor to try.

So I picked up one of each! You cannot blame me. With flavors like Apple Cinnamon, Peaches and Cream, and Maple and Brown Sugar, you cannot just pick one! It can be found in the frozen aisle in heat and eat cups. Each serving is perfectly portioned for me and knowing that it is low calorie and not loaded with more sugar that any human needs is very exciting.

After getting home I needed to make the dreaded choice. Which one do I try first? I chose to try the Apple Cinnamon flavor first. Knowing that you can never go wrong with apples or cinnamon. Looking at the ingredients made me like the Smart Ones Oatmeal even more! The main ingredients are steel cut oats, oats, granola and walnuts. Really, most other oatmeal brands are sugar, sugar, and more sugar!

It turns out that not only do I really like the Smart one oatmeal, but so do my kids. If you are a busy mom, like I am, this is a great way to feed your family a healthy breakfast. It can even be great on the go!

Why Is My Food Yellow?

Have you ever noticed that the food you made for dinner smells and looks amazing?  I started to ask myself "why is my food yellow?"  I knew from growing up that artificial red and yellow dyes were unhealthy for children with epilepsy. Then when my grandson was diagnosed with epilepsy, I paid a lot more attention.

Did you know that red and yellow dyes have been linked to an increases in hyperactivity? Even 30 years ago my doctor knew of a link between red and yellow dyes and epilepsy.

I will not aim my rant at specific companies because they know who they are and why they do it. But what we as parents and grandparents need to do is provide a little education to our children. The juice they drink does not need to be red, green, blue, purple, or orange. The noodles on the table do not need to be so bright that they appear to glow in the dark.The cheese they eat does not need to be dyed to make it more appealing.

I spent the last couple of years looking at labels on the food that I buy. Nearly every major product on the market has some form of color added to make the product more visually appealing to the consumer. That really bothers me when I have a family member with neurological issues that are exacerbated by artificial red and yellow dyes.

Then I learned that Europe banned the use of artificial colors I was thrilled. So why are major US based companies removing dye for products sold in Europe but not in the USA? Isn't it cheaper to produce all of your products the same way? Does it make you more money to add colors to my children's food? Does Europe know something that the USA is ignoring or avoiding?


I have found a few companies out there that have started to change their dyes to natural forms and I am very grateful for those few companies. In fact, I wish there were more of them! The hard part is making the food that is sold in the USA as safe and natural as possible.

No one is dying my asparagus, my lettuce, or my green beans, so keep the dye out of my pasta, cookies, and cheese. Until some of these large companies get a clue, I will only but natural products and naturally dyed products for my table......end of rant
